House Bill 17: Protecting Parental Rights

Author:
Rep. W. Keith Hall

Summary:
House Bill 17 would have amended Kentucky's "Grandparent's Visitation Law" to better protect the interests of parents. Kentucky's current law is probably unconstitutional, in light of the United States Supreme Court Ruling in Troxel v. Granville, 530 U.S. 57 (2000). This bill would have brought Kentucky law into compliance with the Constitution by protecting the rights of parents.

Status:
This bill was introduced to the House on January 7, 2003, and assigned to the House Judiciary Committee. The Kentucky legislature adjourned sine die on March 25, 2003, so HB 17 is now dead.

Action Requested:
None.

HSLDA's Position:
This was a well-designed bill that had our full support.
