Senate Bill 1023: Opens Up Kindergarten to 4-Year Olds

Author:
Education Committee

Summary:
This bill requires the public schools to allow children as young as 4-years old (used to be 5-years old) to attend. The bill specifically states that kindergarten or pre-kindergarten is not compulsory.

We oppose this bill opening up school to 4-year olds because in our experience, this is usually a precursor to making it mandatory. We believe early education is not effective, wastes taxpayers’ money, and expands the state’s control over children.

Status:
1/23/2009(Senate) First Reading—to printing
1/26/2009(Senate) Referred to Education Committee

This bill died when the legislature adjourned.
