Senate File 353: Repeal of Current Marriage Laws

Summary:
This bill would repeal Iowa’s current marriage laws and definitions, along with the current law limiting marriage to a male and a female. This bill would replace “marriage” as currently provided by law with “civil marriage”, a state-conferred legal status that would be open to individuals regardless of sex. Also, this bill would make marriages legally solemnized in any other state or country valid in Iowa, regardless of whether or not that marriage would be permitted by law in Iowa.

The legislature has adjourned without passing this bill; it is now dead.
