House Bill 957: Homeschooler’s Eligibility for the Bright Futures Scholarship

Author:
Rep. Will S. Kendrick

Summary:
Under the current Bright Futures Scholarship eligibility criteria homeschoolers are required to have higher scores then their public school counterparts. We oppose this bill in its original form because it does nothing to change this; it simply codifies the state’s current discriminatory policy. However, the Florida Parent-Educators Association (FPEA) and HSLDA are working with the sponsors to amend the bill so that more options for scholarship eligibility will be available to homeschoolers. One of those options includes eliminating the 100 point score discrimination. Therefore, we will support this bill if the expected amendments are adopted.
