Raised Bill 634: Limiting Educational Authority

Author:
Joint Education Committee

Summary:
This bill would have restricted who may conduct home instruction in Connecticut. Current law permits any person having control of a child to make educational decisions for a child, including the decision to teach the child at home, but Raised Bill No. 634 would have limited this to parents or guardians. This means that grandparents and other relatives of a child would not have been permitted to homeschool a child unless they were appointed legal guardians by court order.

Status:
3/8/2006 Introduced and Referred to Joint Education Committee
3/13/2006 Joint Education Committee hearing at 1 p.m.
5/3/2006 Bill died when the General Assembly adjourned.

HSLDA's Position:
HSLDA opposed this legislation.

Action Requested:
None at this time.
