House Bill 607: An Act Concerning Athletic Eligibility for School Transfers

Author:
Representative Fite

Summary:
This bill would have granted immediate eligibility for participation in school athletics to students transferring into a public or nonpublic school "if the transfer is the direct result of a military transfer, court-ordered change in custody or legal guardianship, or the enrollment of a homeschooled student in the school. Alabama law does not recognize a "homeschool" as an educational option, so it is unclear how this law would be applied. HSLDA takes a neutral position on this type of legislation.

Status:
2/9/2006 Introduced, first reading, and referred to the House Education Committee
4/23/2006 Bill died with Legislature adjourned

HSLDA's Position:
HSLDA takes a neutral position on such legislation.

Action Requested:
None at this time.
