Department of Veterans' Affairs v. C Family
Benefits withheld because of homeschooling

Filed: January 26, 2006

Nature of Case: Like the Theiss (WI) family, the C family has been receiving veterans' benefits. When the oldest daughter turned 18, those benefits were reduced, even though she was still being homeschooled for her senior year. The DVA's letter reducing the benefits stated that they would have to prove that the homeschool was "approved" by a state agency.

Status: HSLDA has appealed this decision, and we are also working to get this problem fixed at the federal level.
