District Harasses Family Over Survey

For two years in a row, a Michigan Home School Legal Defense Association member family has received visits from local school district staff who asked them to take a survey about their homeschool program. Last year, the family told the school officials that they did not want to participate in the survey, and they even had HSLDA contact the officials about it at the time. When school officials returned to the family’s home with the same survey in 2007, the family again called our offices.

HSLDA Senior Counsel Christopher Klicka sent a letter to the school district, informing them that the family was under no obligation to answer the survey questions, and that the inappropriate visits should stop immediately.

The school district’s superintendent called Klicka to apologize for the staff visits, explaining that he was unaware of the visits and that they were the result of miscommunication. He promised that the family would not be visited again.
