Waukee Corrects Letter

Home School Legal Defense Association member Judy Waycaster received a letter from the director of teaching and learning at Waukee Community Schools, asking the family to state what form of year-end assessment they planned on using. This did not seem right to Judy, so she contacted HSLDA.

After examining the letter, HSLDA Staff Attorney Scott Woodruff determined that the school system had indeed overstepped its bounds. Woodruff called the director and explained that homeschooling families are not required to give advance notice of the type of year-end assessment they plan to use. He followed up with an email to the director.

The director submitted the letter to the school system’s attorney, along with Woodruff’s comments. The attorney agreed that the letter needed to be corrected.

Waukee’s letter has now been revised to make it clear that families are not required to state in advance which form of year-end assessment they plan to use—unless they want their testing done through the school system.
